  • engine out for new rings. How long???

I have a smoker 2.4 going on. Need to get the rings changed asap. How long does it take to get the engine out? I know this is an arbitary question, piece of string and all that.

Plus, I have been contemplating the job for a while, have a hoist, will borrow a rolling engine stand. But, what other jobs should I sort out while the engine is in bits? Shells? Seals? That sort of thing. I need a shopping list.

Check the sump for rust, mine had 3 small holes in where it had rotted through.

Always worth changing oil seals if your going to all that trouble of stripping it down.

Top seals on the fuel pump if not already done.

Brushes on the starter maybe (I'm sure there's a kit for repairing them), it's a pig to get to when the engine is in.

As for getting it out, get in there with WD40 on every bolt you can think of ASAP. Hard to guess how long that will take you, doing my 2.4 the hardest bit was getting the rusty exhaust bolts undone, I grew a beard it took that long.
