  • Overdrive Problem?

    Hello Everyone

Am a bonafide Newbie, have a question about my 1991 Surf 2.4 Auto. Recently it appears I have no overdrive, all indications normal and overdrive button works i.e press it and light comes up on dash, but on motorway have noticed rpm sits at 4000 at about 110 km/h. I have checked gearbox oil level and that is fine. Any suggestions would be welcome.

When the overdrive is off, the light is on. You know that don't you?

      Overdive Problem

Yes many thanks. It just seems as if if some one has dropped a power pill in the tank! Have just tried resetting the ECU but still no joy doesn't seem to want to find top gear.

          Mine does 2700rpm at 110kph. O/D off it does 3500rpm at 110kph.

It sounds to me like you haven't even got top gear let alone O/D.

Even with ECT on, mine never ever gets close to 4000rpm.

You have got the stick in D and not anywhere else.......

EDIT - figures in bold are actuals - I tested earlier

            Overdrive Problem

No, have checked that as well! I wondered if maybe the overdrive relay is playing up but not sure where it is located or how to test it. The other thought I had was also the overdrive solenoid but again not sure of its location.

I did a search under 'overdrive relay' earlier. I believe it was thought to be in the fusebox in the driver's footwell. possibly.

I've had much the same problem for the last 5 months. Only 1st 2nd and 3rd gears. No overdrive and no lockup. Changed speed sensor, changed entire gearbox and still no improvement. Searching for a 1KZN ECU now. Where is this relay supposed to be?
                    V hacked off.

On the top of the fuel pump, there's an engine speed sensor. Check that it's plugged in and making a good connection.
