  • I'm getting there - but more questions .....

OK then, this is what I believe so far ........

The 3rd Generation Surf 3.0 diesel is available in 2 models G & X, G having the higher spec.

There are two versions of the 3.0 diesel lump - a standard turbo and an intercooled turbo.

The 3rd gen can be used on tarmac in 4WD if necessary.

    The questions are:

What is the difference between the X & G spec ?

What is the power output of the standard turbo and the intercooled version ?

    Is cruise control available ?

What is the max permissible weight on the towball ?

Tomorrow we are looking for Surfs around Hants & Wilts - any suggestions for questions to ask or things to look out for ?

Apparently there is a guy in Southampton docks who sells direct (some sort of bonded setup I think) - does anybody know anything about him ?

There's bound to be other questions but I'm too knackered to think straight at the moment ...

Thanks for the help guys (and gals !)

As has oft been discussed here, its very hard to define the difference between the various spec's, SSR, SSR-X, SSR-G etc etc. Many 'lower' spec Surfs are in reality higher speced than higher models.
Try a search, its been covered many, many, many times

3rd gen trim levels that I know of are (from entry to top), and I assume the 3.0 td engine is available in all of them:
      SSR-V
      SSR-X
      SSR-X Limited
      SSR-G

4WD can be used on the tarmac as long as it has the Multimode 4WD option - I've never seen one without it but apparently they do exist somewhere.

Pretty much Si - apart from one question:

What does the red button do ?

Well if someone had only said it would have saved a lot of hassle!!

Where is the button search button?

Will this lead to the actual search button or will I have to look through seven pages of rubbish to find someone who provides a link to the actual search button?

Some of the early '96 ones were without multimode; my first one didn't have it. If you drove it hard on tarmac in the dry you'd get a smell of burning (too a couple of trips to figure our what the problem was!!). I also test drove a '97 without multimode. The 4WD light on the dash is in a different position.
