  • turbo ?

hi i dont know if it was on this forum or the old forum. but i posted about smokey engines and i think ive pretty much narrowed it down to to the turbo. someone suggested it could be down to the seals on the the turbo and i think this is my prob. today i took the black pipe off that goes to the air filter and the turbo there was quite a bit of oil in it and ive noticed that it only seems to smoke when the turbo kicks in. so im basicly asking your opinion and if anyone would know where to get a recon turbo and at what price ? just to recap loss of oil no leaks no loss of power and only smoking when turbo kicks in a bluey grey smoke. on a 2.4 turbo desiel 91 thanks in advance for your input

When I stripped my head down I had a bit of oil in the same place, not a lot. As Nev says if its not loads it ain't a problem.
As for the smoke, even with a new head mine smokes a bit on hard acceleration in first and second then nothing in third, fourth & fifth after all its a diesel. So unless yours looks like a bonfire thats had plastic chucked on it I think its normal.
Not so you but some (me included when i first got it) are so used to driving petrol motors that the first time i looked in the mirror after buying the surf i was paranoid about the smoke. Look at the next 1-2 year diesel car in front of you and see how much they chuck out from a motor a lot newer that the surf.

Based on your description of your problem, I would have a mechanic run a compression test on your engine. There may be some oil leakage in your engine's valve seal. That's why you are loosing a bit of oil despite of a visible oil leak.

A low compression rating of your engine due to compression leaks in your engine intake and exhaust valve will lead to black and/or white smoke.

well i was speaking to a mechanic yesterday and he said to get a emissions test done that might give a clearer picture of whats happening. so will do that this week will also look into a compression test. is it a big job ? thanks

It's a pretty easy task. All the mechanic have to do is remove your heater / glow plugs or the fuel injectors (depending on what kind of adaptor he has for his compression tester) one at a time and install a compression gauge into the slot. Then he has to crank up the engine for a few seconds and read the highest pressure attained by your engine per cylinder. Your typical diesel engine should reach a pressure of 20 - 30 kg/cm2.

I wouldn't have thought it would need to be a Toyota specialist to do this. Friends of mine have had their car turbos rebuilt by independent turbo recon companies.... a search on Yell.co.uk would probably get you some names. (There is apparently a really good one in Northants but I can't for the life of me remember the name)

                    turbo recon

                    try turbotech - internet

They know the surf and do an exchange recon turbo for around £350 delivered.

I have changed mine with no probs. The turbo still does not always kick in - particularly if the revs climb slowly - which I assume is the MAP sensor??

You will need the numbers of the turbo some of which are very hard to read - try looking at night with a torch. Good luck

Any advice on the Map sensor welcome. Also Ive got a leaking rear axle?
