  • Transfer, gearbox and fuel tank breathers

I'm aware there are plenty of posts about diff breathers on here, I think I've read them all. Anyway, I've done the axles, they were simple enough. I want to do the transfer case, gearbox and fuel tank (can someone confirm the fuel tank has one?)

I had a mooch around today and found the transfer case breather, I can just reach it from under the car due to the lift (and my skinny girl hands). It doesn't seem to have a hex bolt on it to unscrew it. I found one post on here (for a manual gearbox) that states the gearbox breathers are pressed in (not screwed), is this the case on my 3L Auto? Some people pop the top off and fix the pipe straight to the existing union, is that the easiest way to do it? If so what diameter pipe fits?

Is this the same for the gearbox breather too? I read the gearbox breather has a pipe on it already (can someone confirm that as I've not had a chance to find that one yet?) Is it easy enough to pop that pipe off and stick on a new longer pipe, again what diameter pipe fits?

I also read on one post that the fuel tank has a breather, is this true and does that need extending?

    Thanks.

    Any takers? Bushwacker, Tony?

I'll have a bit of time this weekend, and wouldn't mind getting it done.

Hi, i did the breathers on my truck (2.4) a little while ago.
The transfer case breather was pressed in so i pulled the cover off and fixed the pipe straigtht to the remaining stub.
The gear box breather was a little more awkward, if i really forced my hands behind the head and down towards the bell housing i could just feel a short flexi with a plastic breather attached. I couldn't find get to where the pipe fastens to the gearbox but i dont have a body lift. I pulled the breather off the flexi and extended the pipe using a through coupler etc.

I have replaced the tank breather filter but i'm not sure where this pipe ends up or how high it is, so haven't done this one yet.

      Dazza
      Non consternationes.

The trans case is definitely pressed in. You can get a better look at it by removing the gearstick gubbins inside the truck. (remove the bar under the truck first and disconnect the transfer lever)

The gearbox breather has a little tube that makes its way up between the firewall and the back of the block. I thinks it's clipped to the cable.

Not much help but better than none

edit: might be able to get better access by dropping gearbox xmember.
