    Hi

I'm a new forum member, hopefully on the verge of buying my first surf.

Having a few problems deciding which 3L engine to go for as I cant find any details for BHP on the Intercooled and EFI versions.

Having a nightmare time at the moment as I've come across a tastey surf that unfortunately doesnt have an intercooler or the variable suspension.

Kind of urgent as I dont want to pass up this surf if the Intercooler only makes a small difference to BHP, so I'm keen to hear from anyone who has an Intercooled Surf.

Here is my wish list for my ideal Surf, please comment if any of the combinations are impossible, ie can you still have a lift up tailgate if the spare is under the floor?

    1996 onward 3L surf

    Intercooler

    EFI

Variable Suspension (want to harden up for racing around london)

Lift Up tailgate (to keep rain off when loading my gear)

    Under floor Spare tyre

    Sunroof (to keep wifey happy)

Dark Interior / Leather seats etc (yup... I know thats impossible but my dream car has the 2002 interior!)

Of course if you are selling a surf with all these toys I need to hear from you!

    Best regards

    Mike

As far as I'm aware the 3.0 Turbo Intercooler is 130bhp as opposed to the navaras and L200's of this world that are about 98bhp

Thanks Fieldsy, sounds like I've got the wrong figures for the non intercooled then.... thaught that was 130BHP, must be less then!. Test drove the car yesterday... quick off the mark but very sluggish once rolling.

Think this equates to around 145ish bhp for the intercooled version

97HP i thought it would have been more. Mind you its the torque im after for towing!

                        Specs

                        Thanks Guys

Looks like the Intercooled version is worth searching for at 145BHP.

Non intercooled seemed very sluggish although I am trading up from a 200BHP Nissan.

                        Any further comments very welcome

If its BHP your looking for then you may be better looking at a Range Rover 4.6 or Jeep 4ltr. We tend not to be really concerened with BHP on here as it is Torque that matters and pushing 2+ tonnes of steel at 90mph + is asking for trouble. My 3rd gen non intercooled 3ltr is not sluggish one bit and will cruise all day at 90mph. Take a non intercooler for a drive, you will be suprised !
Having had a 2.4 and now owning a 3ltr, I think they are both capable vehicles on and off road.

what did you think of the torque for towing if you did any? I'm often often towing around 1000kgs so it would be interesting to see....
mind you it should be at least double the power I have now!

                              Bhp

                              Hi Again

Just going back to Andy's post

I'm using BHP as a reference, not concerned about going 90+, to be honest I'm now after a truck that will keep my motorway speed down as my old sports car has a ludicrous top speed.

I did test drive a 3l non intercooled and it was very disappointing... great acceleration from a standing start...... until it hit about 10mph, then everything turned into slow motion. Basically there was nothing there, pedal to metal and the truck only slooooowly climbed up to 50.

Maybe the dealer left the rig in 4wd, although I dont think the Transmission would have survived my lead foot test on tarmac from what I've been reading.

Just feel I dont want a truck that feels that underpowered or struggles to overtake on the motorway. hence my hunt for an intercooled one.

Theres talk of fitting intercoolers in front of the rad with a claimed 30% increase in torque and BHP. even taking this with a pinch of salt it seems worth looking into as the Toyota factory intercooler only seems to add an extra 15 BHP which is about 10% ish.

Unfortunately missed out on the tastey surf that was selling locally, wish I'd known about the add on intercoolers last week, I'd be a surf rider by now!
