  • 1uzfe into 2.4TD surf

hi all i have been cotemplating this for a long time and after picking up a J reg LS400 for £300 its time to do it! i have been on lextreme web site very helpful for this particular project and have got lots of useful information wiring diagrams etc from the site so i am starting the swap now. if it all goes good i will do a write up and post lots of pics. if it doesnt i will have two cars to brake and sell spares!

the plan in a nut shell is to take the engine torque converter bell housing and gear box from the Lexus so the ECU can run the engine and gear box and attach the gear box to the transfer case and hopefully keeping high and low range and 4WD

it has to be done fairly quickly as she wants all cars off the drive so there is more motivation (nagging to get it done) than a woman!

the pic attached is the ECU just for the engine and gear box!

    will keep you all posted!

A mate did this to his mk2 Supra.

And we are now doing it to his mk4 Supra

The first was a LS400 engine and manual box, the new will be a Soarer engine and auto box.

Sounds like a great conversion, if the auto can handle the power.

    Good luck !!

If you get stuck with anything, Bushwhacker has done this conversion, so can guide you through.

yeah i have seen some of the pics of his conversion and am hopefully expecting him to see the thread and offer some advice! i have a lot of info from our aussie and NZ friends who seem to do this on a daily basis the wiring is the biggest head as well as everything else! but i am going to use the engine bell housing torque convertor and gear box from the lexus so should be a little easier than connecting to thte surf because it seems that it doesnt work properly and doesnt change down gear.

as a bonus i would love to take the parking brake form the lexus as it is pretty cool!

will be atempting the wiring this week and next just clearing some space in the lexus at the moment!

Have no fear on that part. He won't miss an opportunity.

Btw, if you haven't got it from one of the other sites already, there is the LS400 manual up on the downloads site.

If you get "really" stuck with the looms. Speak to Rogue Systems. A chap there (Lyndon I think) is a dab hand at the V8.

He did the Thor 1UZ Supra, and my mates mk2 .. using a link ECU.

if the lex' has a separate engine loom your laughin, all you'll need is power to the ECU.

I dare say there will be lots of 'bits' you wont have to bother with like ABS, traction control, cruise control etc..if is all controlled by the same ECU..??

Ive done a few projects, i built an ECU from the board up for my old S2 turbo & mapped it, no where near as complex as a factory toyota, but principals are the same..not too bad once you get your head tuned into it

the Lex ECU does the engine and gear box and thats what i will be putting in to the surf and bolting the transfer case on the end. the lex shaft out the gear box is a little longer than the surf gear box but can be 'cut' to right length by a fabricator so it will fit into the transfer case.

have aslo take the combination meter loom out the lex so will try and fit that to the surf dash so will get right revs and speed etc. as also controlled by the lex engine ECU

OMG! you guys must really know your way around these surfs to attempt such a thing. I wouldn't know where to start. Respect! I'd be happy when I know how to swop an engine over

By the way, on my recent radiator swop that I just done, when I took off the two little pipes at the bottom of the rad, some oil trickled out. Where does this oil come from, and do I have to replace it as I lost a little of it, if so where do I put the oil to replace it? is it simply the engine oil filler?

Simple stuff to you guys no doubt, But I've never set eyes on a surf before 2 months ago.
