burping cooling system?

hello surfers .what a beautiful day!
i have just put my new water pump on,put belts back on,radiater back on e.t.c and top her up with water.i have read a couple of threads that mention burping the cooling system.i tryed to tape a 1.5 ltr water bottle upside down on top of the inlet and running the engine as someone suggested but the tape failed to provide a descent enough seal.is it o.k to run the engine and just check the water levels regulary or is this a major problem?cheers peeps
cant wait to take her for spin its not the same driving a focus.

set heaters to hot and on max then have engine running and keep topping up the coolant.Once no more coolant will go in fit rad cap and take out for a good hard drive.Come home allow to cool and re-check coolant and top up if neccessary.Keep an eye on it for a couple of days and thats it
