  • the temp gauge mod

lots of info on this in the aussie site

I did it today, takes about 2hrs, quicker if you're experienced in getting the dash out

you can get 120 ohm 3w resistors on ebay and all you need is three of them. replace the existing resisitor with one of them, and use the other two, wired piggy-back style (in parallel to use the technical term) instead of the zener diode. this gives 60 ohm instead of 56 but makes no real difference

mine mostly stable on 90 dead centre, but also surprising how much the temperature dies go up and down, maybe by 10 degrees?? doesn't get anywhere near "hot" mind you

    worth doing for sure

At the beginning of November after reading this thread, I ordered the two types of resistor for this mod and today they arrived

They are 5W 56K ohm & 5W 120K ohm resistors as stated in the link posted by Bushwhacker.

There are five in each packet so I have 4 pairs of resistors to give away if anybody wants to do this mod. Can't see me ever needing them for anything.

I'll bagsy a pair too if that's ok! My father-in-law is a dab hand at electroniccy type stuffs so I'll buy him a beer or two and get him to do it (before he drinks the beer of course!)

Ive been thinking of replacing the needle type gauge for a digital one the hope was I could find a retangular didgital screen that would be roughly the same size and simply swap them out in the dash although new wiring would be needed for the aftermarket sender unit - anyone else considered or managed this?

A simple LCD display calibrated as a voltmeter, and then configured with a voltage divider to convert the input voltage to your conventional gauge to a direct reading of temp should work, and should be fairly straightforward to implement - if not to calibrate.
