  • A/C Compressor to air compressor

    just found this set up on the net from yodatech or one of the american sites and seems straight forwardish to get on board air. the big question is will the A/C unit on the lexus be OK to use or not? there are mixed reviews on using it so not sure? could anyone throw any light on this matter?

    Air horns would be cool! and the on board would be useful too!

    1 York AC Compressor (factory installed on an AMC 360 out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee)
    2 Tube-O fitting to 1/2" NPT (Kilby's Rotolock fittings, )
    3 1/2" NPT female to female (kilby or a hardware store)
    4 Air Intake Filter (Kilby Air Intake Filter, FS-07-050)
    5 Square D pressure switch (set to 120 psi off) (Kilby, 49J59)
    6 Air Manifold (hardware store)
    7 Adjustable Relief Valve (set to blow at about 130 psi) (kilby, NC25)
    8 Pressure Gauges (on at manifold, one on dash) (hardware store)
    9 Oil / moisture trap (Coalescing Filter)
    10 Check Valve (Kilby, CB38)
    11 1/4" T, 3 female ports (hardware store)
    12 1/4" Couplers, male port (hardware store)
    13 Barbed 1/4" to 1/4" male port (hardware store)
    14 1/2" NPT male to 1/4" barbed hose fitting (hardware store)
    15 1/4" male to 3/8" (the Oil / moisture trap is actually a 3/8" so the fitting on both sides of the moisture trap is a 1/4" male to 3/8" male. (hardware store)
    16 1/4" Elbow, male one side, female other side. (hardware store)
    17 Male to Male connector (hardware store)
    18 1/4" Elbow, male one side, female other side. (hardware store)
    19 1/4" NPT to 3/8" Nylon Quick Connect (Grainger) NOTE: The air horn and pressure gauges use different sizes, pressure gauges use 1/8" Nylon Quick Connect and Air horn fitting use 3/8" Nylon Quick Connect.
    20 1/4" male NPT to 1/8" female NPT (hardware store)
    21 3/8" Nylon Quick Connect to 1/8" male NPT (air horn adaptor) (hardware store)

    Any particular reason why they did not rate the Lexus comp?

      Nothing wrong with using the Lexus or Surf A/C compressors, but they do generate a lot of heat when pumping continuously to fill a tank.

        I wonder if the front of the pump pulley could be modified to have a cooling fan fitted.

        Of course if you wanted to cool the compressed air you could route it through the now redundant condenser before it reached the air tank.

          Just to bounce my thoughts around the forum as im still getting to grasp with this as it would be good to understand what I would be doing if I carry the mod out. He diagram below is to marry kind of with the parts diagram above as the electrics were a bit unknown but I think I understand it now hence my sketch.
          Feed from battery to 15 A fuse (as that is what is on the lexus diagram for the a/c magnetic clutch) then to a switch to turn the air on so to speak going to the pressure switch with built in relay! Can get various on/off psi but 110 psi on 150 psi off seems to be norm? (this is no 5 in the above diagram and will connected to the ait tank or like in diagram) the relay then goes to the A/C pump to turn the magnetic clutch on which then pumps air in to the air tank and the cycle begins?
          Is this correct or have I got it wrong? All comments welcome! Just need a suitable place to put the air tank now!

          the only other question i need to find is how long can you run the pump continuously as dont want to do all the work then find the pump will burn out

            Seems fine to me.

            You may even be able to use an even smaller rated fuse than the 15A.


            Just double check the pressure switch turns off the circuit before the pressure relief valve operates.

            Have a look at the chassis rails aft of the rear axle for a suitable cylinder location.

              thanks for having a look. on the other write ups there is a lot on the mechanical side of the mod but not much on the electric side so i have done a bit of educated guess work! i was looking at getting a 2 gallon tank from matt savage http://www.mattsavage.co.uk/ and maybe the other electrical bits too but will search the web if there is anywhere else? im not going to skimp on the air bottle will get a certified viair one or something similar. was thinking of putting it in the back with the LPG tank!!
              need to check the air con pump as when i did the engine swap i just left the air con so im not sure what 5h1te is on there! just need to power it up and see if it works or not otherwise its to the salvage yard!

                Don't forget the oiler, or the comp will not pump for very long.

                    No the original compressor is cooled by the cold gas going back to the compressor via the suction port and it is lubricated by oil in the system.This oil is continually cycled around the sealed system.
                    As you are using the suction port as the air inlet port, the compressor will now not receive any cooling or lubrication.
                    As the compressor pumps air it will pass some oil at the same time and eventually run out of oil and it will seize.


                    You will need to figure out a way of oiling the compressor.


                    Most air line system oilers use the air pressure to oil the lines, this is normally used for air tools needing lubrication.

                      just get it right in my head, had alook at a write up on yodatech and the oiler is pre A/C pump and is filled with oil hence in pic 1. i will take an air inlet feed from the back of my air filter as it does have a 2 male outlets post filter. then post A/C pump before the check valve the oil catcher removes the oil?

                      can these be linked so the oil is recycled?

                        just anothere quicky on the oiler, was looking online and was looking at a min inline oiler and the question is most of them are positive pressure being blown through the oiler. this will be on the A/C inlet so it will sucked or drawn through the oiler at a lower pressure so will it still work and lubricate the A/C pump?

                          I am not sure recycling the oil would be a good idea only because it may have a high amount of moisture.

                              before i get ahead of myself i need to make sure the air con pump works as when putting the lexus v8 in i left the air con in/outlet exposed so im note sure it it full of crap and water etc. just a few pics of the pump. may need some help vince to determine which is the live / signal wire etc if you have the other end of the connector knocking about? . the pics below of the pump i know there should be 2 wires and can be seen in the pic, however there is a 3rd single wire coming off the front of the pump. not sure what it is for? any ideas.

                              think this is the signal/live wire and earth for the magnetic clutch
