  • Spare wheel carrier/ back door swap?

I just got a new Surf with the spare wheel stored underneath rather than on the swing gate on the back door. Can I swap the back door and fit a swing gate to this Surf? I am not a fan of storing the spare underneath, especially when you need it and the lowering mechanism has rusted solid in a foot of mud in the pishing rain at -2degrees!

You will need to reinforce the rear pillar to take the weight of the carrier but it is able to be done

What kind of reinforcement would be needed? is any welding required, or is it a matter of fitting a plate accross the mounting bolts?

It will probably be best to spot weld a plate to the inside but may just get away with just bolting the plate.I can't remember if there is reinforcing in the rear pillar tbh as its been a few years since i had a surf

afaik you can get the reinforcing plates out of a wreck. need to cut the pillar open to get them out. i'm told you can just bolt them in.

I thought all the body shells had the plates regardless. Worth a check first.

Read this thread by Budweiser who has done the job and also the other thread by Popeye who has also done it and which is hyperlinked within Budweisers thread. Should be more than helpful.

I will have to go look , but I am sure everything is there apart from the 2 metal reinforcers you need to weld in os D post. May have to buy some new mounting bolts for it as I had to clear out some stuff and I think they got chucked by mistake. As for cost , make an offer. Postage will be high I think.
